Walking the Blue Ridge
A Guide to the Trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway
For this updated edition of the classic Parkway trail guide, Leonard Adkins has rehiked many of the trails, reworked the descriptions of their physical features, added new trails, and deleted trails that have closed. The book includes hikes for every skill and interest level, from five-minute "leg-stretchers" to overnight hikes. In addition to trail length and difficulty, Adkins notes points of interest and natural features to be found along each trail.
"We value the detailed and well-organized information contained in Adkins's book and consider it a fine asset for our visitors. It provides the most complete information on our trail system, and our trail planners refer to it regularly. We know it provides reliable information.--Larry Hultquist, Blue Ridge Parkway Resident Landscape Architect

Veteran hiker Leonard M. Adkins describes every one of the more than 100 official Blue Ridge Parkway walking trails along with every other trail (more than 70) that comes in contact with the Parkway. For this updated edition, Adkins has rehiked many of the trails and reworked many of the descriptions of their physical features, added new trails, and deleted a few trails that have closed.
There are hikes for every skill and interest level: five- or ten-minute "leg-stretchers"; one- or two-hour walks; longer day or overnight hikes.
Adkins details each walk, noting exact length, points of interest, and natural features.
Leonard M. Adkins is author of ten books on travel and the outdoors and has hiked more than 16,000 miles, including four complete traverses of the Appalachian Trail. His books have received the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism and National Outdoor Book Awards and other awards. He lives in the Catawba Valley of Virginia, a few miles from the Parkway, and walked every one of its official trails with a measuring wheel in preparation for this book.
